Naturelog: Tuesday 18th March

A lunchtime meeting in Beckenham, Kent gave me the opportunity to spend a couple of hours at Kelsey Park.

In many ways Kelsey Park is similar to the Tarn in that it is a woodland Park surrounding a lake, but Kelsey is about 4 times the size. As time was limited I restricted myself to a circuit of the lake which has river sections at the ends.

There was a good selection of water birds on the lake, although no Great Crested Grebe which is commonly found here (one of the few local sites for this species). There is a small heronry on an Island in the main lake, but there seemed to be little activity which was suprising as when we visited Swell Wood heronry some weeks ago there was much activity and many nests were occupied.

There were good numbers of Canada Geese, Greylag Geese, Mallard and Tufted Duck on the lake and on the River section at the southern end of the park there were a pair of Mandarin Duck

This is also reported to be a good site for Kingfisher, but this was the only one that I saw today.

Nothing out of the ordinary seen but a pleasant walk during which I recorded 26 species which is actually not a bad return for about 90 minutes in a suburban park. The river sections look like they may be good for dragonflies later in the year so will try to schedule a return visit then.
