Day 2 of my trip to West Wales and before we left the hotel we were treated to watching a stand-off between two Nuthatches in the garden. They stood absolutely still for about 5 minutes before one flew at the other and drove it off.

Nuthatches

Our travels started off on the Pendam Mountain Rd, where we had excellent views of Tree Pipit and Stonechat.

The rain started to fall and so we decided to make our way to the Dyfi Osprey Project site. From the hide, we had excellent views of the two nesting Ospreys.

Elsewhere on the reserve, we had good views of Cuckoo, Lesser Redpoll and Siskin along with hearing Reed and Sedge Warblers singing from the reed-beds.

Our next stop was Glandyfi, a viewpoint looking over the Dyfi Estuary. Here we added Goosander to the species seen along with Cormorant and a number of Little Egrets.

Our final visit was to a hill at the rear of the RSPB reserve at Ynys Hyr where we had again excellent views of Cuckoo but although we could hear a singing Whinchat we were unable to locate the bird. Buzzards circled overhead and as we prepared to leave a Grey Heron flew down the valley.

A bright sunny day saw Keith and I off to the London Wetland Centre in search of summer migrants. On our arrival we made our way out via the sheltered lagoon as this is a favoured place for newly arrived small birds and were fortunate enough to find a Willow Warbler giving good views.

From the end of the lagoon we were able to get distant views of the Kingfisher nest and one bird perched outside.

From the Wader scrape hide we were able to observe the Sand Martin nesting bank and watch as the early arrivals went backwards and forwards collecting material for their nests. But there was little else of note on the scrape. Moving onto the Tower hide we were immediately put onto a Water Pipit by some other birders who were watching it. It disappeared and after a short while appeared closer to the Tower and gave very good views. Unfortunately, it did not stay long enough to get a photo but as it flew off it appeared to be joined by a second bird so it is probable that we had actually seen 2 birds.

After lunch we retraced our steps around the sheltered lagoon and located both Common Chiffchaff and Blackcap together with a confiding Wren.

Having made out made our way across to the other side of the reserve, the areas seemed quiet and so as the afternoon drew on we made our way back to the Tower and were able to get good views of a Common Snipe.

First stop on our two week trip to Lancashire and Cumbria was the Wetlands Trust reserve at Martin Mere near Preston.

Although a reserve best known for its wintering wildfowl, Martin Mere is a great place to explore at any time of the year. Although there was no unusual birds present the day we visited, there were still a good selection of resident breeding birds and Summer migrants.

I think the highlight for me was the Tree sparrows on the the feeder station, as this is becoming a rare species in the UK and it was great to catch up with a small party and be able to photograph them (albeit on a protected feeder)
